What Auctioneers Do

10 Things Auctioneers Do Each Day

Auctioneers may be known as fast talkers that can rattle out a spool of words involving numbers and what we as Auctioneers refer to as filler words. The most important thing about the process is to allow the consumer or auction enthusiast to understand the numbers. The rest is just a lot of fun. Let’s take a look at how much fun an Auctioneer may have… in a day in the life. AuctioneerThese are 10 things that Auctioneers may do each day and are part of daily routines or specialty areas that make Auctioneers more professional, more engaging, and more in tune. Doing and being the best they can be in specialized fields of business or generally making it happen while working on or off the stage. Auctioneers are not all boots and hats. Auctioneers are business men and business women that conduct sales for estates, bankruptcy courts, private sellers, financial institutions and they are doing multi-million dollars deals as well as selling 10 or 15 dollar items. The craft comes within the specialty or niche marketing an Auctioneer is the best at. That means that a Real Estate Auctioneer will probably more than likely do business with folks that have real estate for sale,  many car auctioneers work for Auto Auction Companies. Now contract Auctioneers just may be a bid caller and that’s it, the Auctioneer specializes in every move a buyer will make, watching and looking as the numbers roll of their tongue. The anticipation is real and reality is real fast when it happens, but an experienced, talented business person on the auction block will make the difference between a few dollars and a lot more dollars than you may expect. So boots, hat, tie, suit and coat may not be the only dress code, however, the Auctioneers tool box is filled with many unique gifts. Let’s take a look at what Auctioneers do everyday across this country. Watch this video and be enlightened as Michael Chambers and Michael Riggins work an Automobile Auction in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  1. Practice – Auctioneers practice daily. They’re no different than quarterbacks, comedians, actors, singers, or other professionals. To be a good Auctioneer, practice makes perfect. Auctioneers practice the chant, they practice poise and presence, they practice breathing, and voice control in fine-tuning the art of Auctioneering.
  2. Business Development – Auctioneers are business people. Every day is a new venture with new opportunities. Auctioneering is not just about being behind a microphone. It’s more about being front and center with a professional attitude, personal appearance, and the goals necessary to build more than just a presence.
  3. Help Others – Auctioneers are some of the most giving people on the planet. They’re the first to reach out and lend a hand in many, many circumstances. Many times unseen by the public, Auctioneers may be helping a farmer get a stuck tractor out of a ditch, helping someone move, or volunteering at a school event. Auctioneers are also talented performers and they take the stage in front of generous crowds raising millions of dollars for world-known charity organizations and those community organizations that need a helping hand.
  4. Marketing – Auctioneers are known to have some of the best marketing minds on the planet. “Thinking outside the box is what we do,” says Beth Rose, second-generation Auctioneer and Real Estate Broker with over 30 years in the industry. “When selling goods and services, you want the world to know about it, hire an Auctioneer and see the difference aggressive marketing can make,” Rose says.
  5. Sell Personal Property Items – There are known to be over 30,000 Auctioneers in the United States and many of those Auctioneers can be found everyday selling personal property. From farm tractors to construction equipment and estate sales, you can find the Auctioneer crying to get a few dollars for the old pots and pans left over in the cupboards or many thousands of dollars for reliable used equipment while Internet Auction sales are getting increasingly popular.
  6. Real Estate Sales – In the past few years Real Estate Auctions have become very popular. This may involve a deeper business plan that includes Real Estate Licensing in most states. However, Auctioneers are becoming well known for being able to market and promote real property for good market value. Land, Farms, and Homes all are sold everyday by live auctions, as well as online-only bidding platforms an the use of mobile apps.
  7. Benefits – Auctioneers may be better defined as Benefit Auction Specialists. These Auctioneers are well crafted in understanding what it takes to plan, design, and make an event scream “fundraiser.” Scott Robertson of Florida, known as the “VOA” (Voice of Auctioneering), holds hundreds of fundraising events annually for Pet Lovers in Florida to The Napa Wine Auction in California and he brings excitement to every event. Benefit Auction Specialists raise millions of dollars every year for a wide range of non-profit organizations. Hero’s to many, special within their own ranks.
  8. Specialty Auctions – Celebrity Car Auctioneers rev up and speed though thousands of Classic Car Auctions. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of cars are sold annually at commercial car auctions across the planet. Now these car auctions are on major cable channels and have been embraced by the Internet as a way of attracting more buyers online and fans as well.
  9. Give Back To The Community – Auctioneers are members of various community organizations, from Rotary International, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and State and National Auction Professional Organizations such as the National Auctioneers Association. Auctioneers are found on the front lines of many social, religious, and community organizations, not because they have to keep an image, but rather for the opportunity to be involved for the greater good.
  10. Talk – Yes, Auctioneers are fast talkers. Almost every day you will find Auctioneers on the Auction Block making the numbers roll. Offline or online in todays modern world, Auctioneers conduct hundreds of auctions daily in front of live crowds or on Internet Bidding Platforms. No device can ever take the place of the rhythmic chant made by the sound of an Auctioneer. They possess the tone, the mesmerizing chant, and the allure that makes folks listen intently, asking the question “How do they talk so fast?”
  11. BONUS SECTION… Auctioneers are also in the crowds everyday catching bids for other Auctioneers. Clerking the items sold, helping carry boxes of sold items to a customers truck and then there is the clean up. A Professional Auction Team will leave a place better than they found it. Auctioneers wear many hats and are the first the help other Auctioneers. They are called ringman, bid assistants, bid catchers and a few other choice words like, Dad, Uncle, Aunt, Brother, Friend… because Auctioneers are close as a family should be, even though we all may not be kin. Auctioneers are not scared to be behind a microphone taking bids while calling them out loud, they are also eager to perform to the best of their ability for sellers, other Auctioneers or Auction Companies that have hired them in what ever duty ask of them.

real estate auctions The list of items sold at auction is impressive. A small portion of that list includes luxury mansions, classic cars, army tanks, Rolex watches, thoroughbred horses, cattle, unclaimed property, seafood, and produce. It’s a wonderful business and many have taken the path qualifying to become Auctioneers. For whatever reason or whatever specialty one may have in mind, the profession of Auctioneering will be alive and well for years to come. Many states require an 80-hour course designed for the proper structure to call bids and the requirements needed to understand the laws, business structure, and ethical procedures required to be one of America’s Best Auctioneers.

auctionsTo find out how to become an Auctioneer, ask me, Myers Jackson. I am a fifteen-year veteran of the business and have built a thriving live-auction presence while selling real property online. I have performed at fundraising events at local elementary schools, national conferences, and foundations like “It’s All About the Kids” Foundation hosted at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California. I also have a starring role as the main Auctioneer of the Reality TV Show, “Texas Flip and Move” on DIY, HGTV and the Great American County networks.
