Vermont LandLocated in the northeast corner of the United States, Vermont real estate covers 9,615 square miles or 6.2 million acres.  The total land in agriculture is 1.34 million acres, which represents 21.6 percent of the total land area.  The average Vermont farm size is 235 acres.  During the westward movement in America, John Deere from a piece of Vermont farmland made the plow used by settlers for the tilling of the Great Plains.

Livestock thrives in the rocky and hilly terrain.  Most of the world’s major cow breeds, beef cattle, sheep, llamas, alpacas, goats, chickens, turkeys, emus, and rare poultry breeds, eggs, and other livestock products do well..  Of course, the most well known are the Holstein dairy cows.  In fact, Vermont has the highest ratio of dairy cows per capita in the nation.

Dairy products account for over three-fourths of the state’s agricultural economy.  Vermont farmers also produce many crops including corn, apples and other fruits and vegetables, greenhouse and nursery products, hay, Christmas trees, fiber products, honey and the famous Vermont maple syrup.  The small state produces over a third of the maple syrup used in the United States.  The state produces more hay than other New England states.

Vermont LandSoils forming in loamy glacial till are good for agricultural and forestry purposes.  Forests draw thousands of visitors during the autumn to see fall foliage changing colors between the end of September and mid October every year.  Beginning with the Tun-bridge Soil Series, the official State Soil, the state offers a wide variety of soils.  The most fertile land is on the west near Lake Champlain and in the east in the Connecticut River Valley.  The hilly areas are perfect for hay production.

Four mountain ranges cluster in the Green Mountain State.  The Green Mountain ridge bisects the state and the Appalachian, Hoosac, and Taconic are also present.  Mount Mansfield (4,393 feet above sea level) is the highest peak.
